ROAD TRIP - AMERICA
In recent years, I’ve witnessed the cultural and political fabric of America fray. Social media, talking heads, and partisan divides have created what feels like a nation of strangers. This America greatly disturbed me and I wondered if any of the great country I experienced on my past road trips still existed.
It was time to get off my own beaten path, and take a third road trip to rediscover the America I had visited and experienced some 40 years earlier. Leaving behind traffic jams and crowded trains with people on a mission and had no time for any personal interaction, I headed south, with no definite destination, to begin the first of my next five separate “Road Trip America” journeys.
While a traveler might be prepared for the sophistication of city life, hurried people multitasking, the suburban sprawl of strip malls, and the tourist locations we frequently travel, I discovered there is still a grand and beautiful “unseen America”. It was in this America that I discovered the remnants of our past and the roots of this great country. I encountered landscapes that have not changed in countless years, I met farmers and ranchers who have tended their land for generations, I photographed structures that predated the Civil War and I met American Natives whose ancestors were here long before this land was called America. This “unseen America’” is a place of timeless beauty and rich history, often overlooked in our modern, fast-paced lives.
The people I met during my journeys were warm, welcoming, and had time to chat. They were curious about who this traveler was and why he was taking pictures. They enjoyed a conversation with a stranger and were happy to have their photographs taken. Their pace of life was slower and more personal.
After many months and over 20,000 miles on the road, I can state with conviction, forget the airline, get off the interstate, put down your phone, turn off the radio and unplug your GPS. Make whatever time you have available, and experience an “Unseen America”, you will be well rewarded.
